Last year was our first camp Bestival ( Family festival) experience and I totally packed way too much. Noted below is a list of festival essentials for first-time campers.
How can a seasoned camper get it so wrong? Packing for a festival and packing for a camping trip are two separate experiences.
Read on to discover the top items that festival campers cannot do without. Excluding a tent of course.
The only access to your pitch at camp Bestival is by foot, therefore, having a pull along wagon to take the load will save you hours of heavy lifting and car park visits. We loaded up our tent and other essentials and headed to our designated pitch. Our Brandon Wagon came everywhere with us over the course of the festival, doubling up as a late night bed for the kids and a carrier for deckchairs.
There is no direct access to water on site unless you buy it. This could end up a costly expense as vendors will only sell small bottles of drinking water. Even in the hospitality area where there are showers and washing up areas, I found the queue was always ridiculously long. We have a portable fold up washing basin in which comes in handy for a good wash down. I always take a few flannels and some nice washing products.
What’s the harm in partying in your wellies? I always pack as much waterproof clothing as I can when camping as to stay dry. Always have at least two emergency ponchos in your kit, available from Poundland.
SIM in camping terms stands for self-inflating Matt. Be sure to purchase a thickness of 5cm and above. Festival camping equals no electric pumps for air beds so we really are sticking to the basics. Last year we swapped inflatable beds for SIMS and experienced a much better nights sleep whilst camping. SIMS are lightweight and portable and can be strapped to a backpack.
A Back Pack
From tent to the main arena is a really good walk at the Lulworth site where Camp Bestival is held. We tend to be prepared and pack a full days essentials when leaving camp so a back pack comes in handy. I always have a few spare ziplock plastic bags stuffed inside for storing snacks, extra clothes or holding a water bottle.
I have learned to revert from a glamper to a camper for Camp Bestival and pack layers rather than heavies. Next year we will be wearing leggings under denim shorts and vests under T-shirts. Lightweight clothing that is easy to roll and can be dressed up or down and not forgetting items such as a sun hat and glasses.
Remember there will be no access to power points and if you are a gadget lover like me then you will want to pack spare camera batteries and an easy point and shoot. For mobile phones, a charger bank is a great idea too.
Although we pack a small lightweight torch for our Daughter, I always go big with a torch. The lantern I own has two light settings and a USB port which conveniently charges my phone. I have found a similar model and you can shop the item by clicking here.
If you are heading to Camp Bestival this year then join in the fun by following the nautical theme. I am so excited to plan our outfits and pack our face paints for 2018
