St Petersburgh is Russia’s second largest city after Moscow so how can you squeeze all the good bits into one day? Read on to find out how we did St Petersburgh in a day on one of our recent cruise itineraries with Celebrity UK.
There are several different itineraries you may want to seek out whilst in the city and as this is our third trip now we decided to book an excursion and travel with an escorted group down into the subway. The subway in Russia is fascinating and has huge amounts of history attached to it. The metro opened in 1955 and is one of the most elegant underground subways in the world. I was thankful for the bodyguard that was present on our tour as there were some real characters down there. The escalators feel as if they are taking you deeper underground than you have ever been before and once down there, it feels a little eery. But the visuals are stunning.
My photographs really are not that great but as we were only in St Petersburgh for a day, our time was limited. I also had to be very discreet with my camera as the subway was extremely busy and has a high crime rate. But you can get the feel of the main interior of the gold leaf subway in St Petersburgh and stations beyond.
I have found this website here which details the most beautiful stations in st Petersburgh. The images are much more detailed than mine and it is a really interesting read if you are planning a visit.
I was keen to see the indoor market but was well aware that I would be unable to take any edible goods back onboard the ship. The visuals were again great to see and it was interesting to learn about traditional Russian food and see how fresh their produce was. We were able to buy fruit from the vendors but beware they will sell you a bigger stock and charge you a very high price if you don’t speak the language.
After the tour, we had time to wander off on our own and explore some parks with our Daughter. We ventured past the church of the savior on blood and took some photos. It was a beautiful day and we grabbed an ice cream and did some people watching!
St Basils Cathedral, The Hermitage and the Winter palace are also high on the list of places of interest when visiting Russia. I don’t ever think that one trip will be enough. I hope to go back one day and see the ballet.
